Navelim Sporting Club emerged the champions of the Late Afonso Aguiar Memorial inter-village football tournament organised by Cuncolim Union after beating Don Bosco Oratory Fatorda 2-1 in the final at Government School Playground, Cuncolim on Sunday.
Navelim Sporting broke the deadlock in the 15th minute through Prestly Gomes. Don Bosco created many half-chances for themselves but could not equalise in the first half.
In the second half, Don Bosco started aggressively but Navelim scored their second goal through the boots of Ronaldo Pereira in the 40th minute. Don Bosco reduced the margin through Joel Camara.
At the prize presentation function, Rohit Kadam, Director, Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, was the chief guest and distributed the prizes in the presence Dr Laximan G Naik, Chairperson, Cuncolim Municipal Council, Antonio Pango, Vice-president, GFA, Anthony Vaz, Vice-chairperson, CMC, Levino Dias, former state women's team coach, Videsh Dessai, Chairperson, Cuncolim Educational Society and councillor of Culwada, Cuncolim. Family members of late Afonso Aguiar were present as special invitees along with Elvis Gomes, former GFA president.
Navelim Sporting won a cash prize of Rs 50,000 at the hands of Kadam while runners-up Don Bosco Fatorda received a cash prize of Rs 40,000 at the hands of Dr Laximan G Naik.
