Navelim Villagers Union beat Raia Sporting Club 7-6 via the tiebreaker to clinch the 21st Bro Eulalio Vas Memorial Trophy in the final of the inter-village football tournament organized by Don Bosco Oratory of Fatorda at DBO ground, Fatorda on Sunday.
The teams played in front of 1400 spectators and the rain didn't dampen the spirit of players and spectators. Raia netted the first goal through Garrison Fernandes power-packed shot in the 12th minute but it didn't take long for Navelim villagers Union three minutes later Clinton Niasso equalised with a ground shot.
In the second half Pele Xavier, coach of Raia Sporting, changed the game plan, deploying Laren Dias in the midfield as well as on the frontline and the plan worked well as Raia netted the second goal through Leran Dias with a placement shot in the 47th minute.
With just some minutes left for the final whistle, Climax Lawrence, the coach of Navelim villagers Union instructed Prestly Gomes to do a solo move which yielded results to equalise 2-2 for Navelim villagers Union. In the tiebreaker, Navelim villagers Union proved to be the better shooters.
Fatorda MLA Vijay Sardessai was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runner's up in the presence of Fr Ralino D'Souza, Fr Kinkey, Anthony Pango, GFA vice-president, Andrew Ferrao, GFA executive committee member other dignitaries and club officials.
