Navelim Villagers Union move to the quarters after defeating Wildred Leisure SC, Curtorim via the tie-breaker 7-6 of the 17th All Goa Guirdolim Panchayat Cup, organised by Guirdolim Club, at Chandor Church Sports Complex, on Monday.
The match started with both teams playing cautiously, it was Wildred who had the first shot on goal in the 10th minute when Nalister Silveira after hoodwinking a couple of Navelim defenders unleashed a powerful strike which missed the mark narrowly. Clinton Niasso of Navelim tried his luck from distance in the 17th minute but Johnson Bhogot under the Wildred goal displayed good reflexes to palm the ball out of play. The teams went into the break with the scoreline reading 0-0.
Changing ends, Wildred came out stronger with Nalister troubling the Navelim defence with his speedy runs on the left flank. A move initiated by Afileo Fernandes on the right wing saw Joy Hilario squaring up Nalister who slammed the ball past the Navelim keeper to give Wildred the lead in the 35th minute.
The Navelim lads quickly regrouped and started throwing more numbers forward but resolute defending by Wildred thwarted their every effort. Just when it seemed like the match would end in favour of Wildred, a defensive error in the 58th minute by Wildred enabled Malappa to score the equaliser and take the game to the tie-breaker.
In the resultant tie-breaker, Frenden, Terance, Malappa, Mark, Macuin and Rayen scored for Navelim while Joy, Aliston, Milagres, Malcolm and Ryan were on target for Wildred.
Malappa was awarded the player of the match by Roland Moses, Ex Sports Secretary of Guirdolim Club.
