MARGAO: The Founders Cup 2024 U-17 boys' 9-a-side inter-school football tournament kicked off at the Chinchinim Church ground on Wednesday. The tournament is being organised by Union of Chinchinim Villagers.
In the opening match, Regina Martyrum High School, Assolna registered a solitary goal win against Mount Mary's High School, Chinchinim. The hero of the match was Danstan Fernandes who netted the all-important goal in the 15th minute of the second half.
Mount Mary's had their chances in the first half, with Godfrey Simoes' powerful shot being superbly saved by the Regina Martyrum goalkeeper.
The second match saw Manovikas School defeat St. Anne's High School, Agonda, by a comfortable margin of 3-0. Abner Viegas opened the scoring for Manovikas in the 10th minute with a well-placed shot. Ruben Barretto and Nathaniyal Lobo added to the lead with a goal each before the lemon break
St. Anne's put up a fight in the second half, but Manovikas' defenders proved too strong,
Earlier,the tournament was officially inaugurated by chief guest Fr Christphor Fernandes in the presence of Mario Furtado, son of the late Joe Meny Furtado.
