Goa play their opening match of the 76th National Football Championship for Santosh Trophy main round against defending champion Kerala on February 10.
Speaking to The Goan on Monday, Goa captain Jovial Martins spoke about the preparations of the team. Martins is hopeful that the young squad will be able to play fearlessly and enjoy their time out on the field.
"We are raring to go in the national championship again. Many of the players have done well in the Goa Pro League. We had one week to prepare for the main round," Martins said. “We have a mixture of youth and experience in our team; players that have played at the senior level as well. So, I am sure the boys will give their 100 per cent and the results will follow,” he said.
When asked about his opponents for the tournament, Martins showed ample respect but believes that Goa can overcome all the challenges. The captain stated that the team is ready to face Kerala in the first match. “They have a strong, compact team. We know what we are facing, and we are ready. We can expect an aggressive match," he said.
"When any team plays the national championship, they always give their best. And Kerala will also try to put their best foot forward. All teams are growing and improving at a rapid pace. So, we can’t expect the same results to be repeated. We just have to work hard and be more focused in the attacking third, and I believe we can win against Kerala," Martins said.
The team will leave for Odisha on February 7.
