Sao Jose de Areal edged past Cuncolim Union 4“3 in a tense penalty shootout to advance in the 3rd Fr. Bruno Leitao Memorial Inter Village Football Tournament, organized by the Union of Chinchinim Villagers at the Chinchinim Church Ground.
The first half saw both teams waste opportunities. In the 16th minute, Jollyton of Cuncolim was denied by the Areal goalkeeper, while Anyon missed a golden chance for Areal just a minute later. Barsel also came close in the 24th minute, but the Cuncolim keeper ensured the match remained goalless at the break.
Areal started the second half on the front foot and took the lead in the 8th minute through Barsel. However, their advantage was short-lived, as an own goal by an Areal defender in the 12th minute brought Cuncolim Union level. Cuncolim had a chance to win it with a free-kick in the 26th minute, but failed to capitalize, sending the game into penalties.
In the shootout, Sao Jose de Areal held their composure to clinch a 4“3 win.
The player of the match was awarded to Cinton Travasso of Sao Jose de Areal.
