PANAJI
Sonics were crowned champions of the Women’s category at the State Senior Basketball Championships after a composed and clinical 39“21 victory over Jades in the final at Don Bosco Oratory, Panaji.
The tournament was co-sponsored by Priority Constructions and organised by Lourdes Basketball Club under the aegis of the Goa Basketball Association and the Sports Authority of Goa.
Backed by an energetic crowd, Sonics controlled the contest from the outset, winning every quarter except the second, which was tied. The quarter-wise scores read 8-3, 9-9, 14-7 and 8-2 in favour of the eventual champions, who combined discipline with big-match temperament to secure the title.
Fleur Vaz and Keiya Fernandes led the scoring with 13 points each, driving Sonics’ attack through assured finishing and composed mid-range shooting. Kim D’Souza added 9 points and delivered a standout all-round performance that earned her the Finals MVP award. Rochelle Fernandes also proved instrumental, providing relentless defensive pressure and transition play that kept Jades from building momentum.
Jades, comprising several of Goa’s top players, battled hard through Atika Suriya (11 points) and Amisha Lotlikar (10 points), while teammates Sarah Hussain, Pratigya Gupta and Laxmi Kewat contributed with determined play at both ends. But despite their effort, Sonics’ sharper execution in the second half allowed them to pull away and seal a deserved championship triumph.
