St Anthony SC Assolda downed a fighting Curtorim Gymkhana 2-0 to enter the last-eight of Cavelossim Villagers UK Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim.
In the fifth minute, a rasping shot by Assolda's Socorro Fernandes was well saved by an agile Curtorim keeper Prakash Joshi. At the other end, Curtorim's Aleeward gave an inch-perfect pass to James Fernandes, whose header missed the mark as the match remained goalless at the break.
In the second half, Assolda kept pushing for the lead which they found in the 63rd minute. Valente Fernandes floated the ball in the penalty area for Velson Fernandes to head home.
Curtorim fought back when skipper Manuel gave a pass to Allan Peixote, who was tripped by Jerry in the penalty area and referee Rozabir awarded a penalty. However as Assolda players protested, he consulted his assistant Amiro and reversed his decision and awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. The free kick taken by Mario Mascarenhas was kept out by keeper Alwyn Faria. Towards the end, Valentino scored a superb goal, assisted by Faiden Pereira, to put an end to Curtorim's hopes and seal a hard-fought 2-0 victory for Assolda.
Arlem Youth shoot into quarterfinals
Arlem Youth Association prevailed over Parish Youth Nuvem 8-7 via tiebreaker in the pre-quarterfinals of the 47th Chandor Seamen's Trophy football tournament organised by Chandor Club at Chandor ground on Sunday.
The Arlem team dominated the proceedings in the first half, scoring three goals. Eldon Colaco opened the account for Arlem in the sixth minute, Daniel Gomes made it 2-0 in the 19th minute and Eldon scored the third in the 35th minute. Nuvem came back strongly in the second half but Velito Cruz of Arlem Youth scored in the 40th minute.
Then, Nicolau Colaco of Nuvem scored in the 42nd and 47th minutes. Arlem then scored through Sweden Barbosa in the 55th. minute. Nuvem came back strongly and scored three goals to equalise through Myron Borges in the 65th minute, Inacio Colaco in the 70th minute and Nicolau Colaco in the injury time.
In the tiebreaker that followed, Arlem 5-4. For Arlem Youth, Velito Cruz, Daniel Gomes, Allen Fernandes, Eldon Colaco and Movin Gaunkar were on target. For Nuvem, Nicolau Colaco, Alloid Colaco, Inacio Colaco and Francis Colaco scored. Arlem Youth will meet Fr Agnelo Youth Sports Club, Paroda in the quarterfinals.
Calangute Veterans edge past SAI Veterans
Calangute Veterans beat SAI Veterans 6-5 via the tiebreaker and moved into the finals of the POGO Boys 50-plus Veterans Cup organised by POGO Boys Merces at Our Lady of Merces Church ground Merces on Sunday.
Alexander Fernandes of SAI Veterans opened the scoring in the 9th minute but the joy was short-lived as Agustine Rodrigues equalised for Calangute in the 22th minute. Fifteen minutes later, Santan Furtado of SAI Veterans made it 2-1 off a cross from Shankar.
But Calangute Veterans equalised in the second half with Agustine Rodrigues scoring with a rebound from the goalkeeper, making it 2-2. Both the teams got many chances but the keepers were solid at the back. In the tiebreaker, Calangute Veterans proved to be the better shooters.
Fatrade B down Guneavaddo to progress
Fatrade B got the better of Guneavaddo and moved into the next round of the Varca Cup football tournament organised by Varca Boys at Varca ground on Sunday.
Fatrade B netted the match winner through Nash Fernandes. The Man of the match award was presented to Alan Gunvaddo. In another match, Pedda A blanked Chadwado 2-0 and moved into the next round. Jonas Rodrigues and Megan Cardozo netted a goal each for Pedda A.
