In its ongoing commitment to youth empowerment and community development, Vedanta Iron Ore Goa (IOG) partnered with the Shri Mahamaya High School Ex-Students Association to host the third edition of the ‘Mayem Marathon.’
The event brought together community members and fitness enthusiasts from Bicholim Taluka, under the theme ‘Run for Nature, Preserve the Future,’ promoting environmental awareness and sustainability.
The marathon has become a staple event in Goa’s marathon calendar, with over 1,500 participants registering this year, the highest number to date. Runners competed across various segments, including 21km, 10km, 5km, and 3km, with separate categories for school students of different age groups. In an inclusive move, a segment was added for specially-abled athletes, highlighting the importance of inclusivity in sports. Para-athlete Sakshi Kale, known as the ‘Iron Lady,’ took the top spot in the 5km general category, inspiring participants with her determination.
The competition was fierce, with Siddesh Barje and Nandesh Gaonkar securing the top two spots in the 21km category. Hari Valip and Ayan Soares won in the 10km boys’ and girls’ categories, respectively, while Parshuram Ghade claimed victory in the 5km segment. Other winners included Sanjay Kelkar, Suresh Murgaonkar, and Draksshayni Murgod across various distance categories.
The event reinforced the importance of fitness, community participation, and environmental awareness, while also showcasing the resilience of athletes from all backgrounds.
