Verna Veterans blanked Seraulim Veterans 2-0 to move into the quarterfinals of the 9th Navelim Inter-village Veterans Cup organised by Navelim Veterans at Rosary Ground, Navelim on Saturday.
Gladstone Vaz, the Seraulim striker, connected a ball to Henry Fernandes but his shot failed to find the mark in the 4th minute. At the other end, Verna Veterans' Remedios Barretto fired a long-ranger over the Seraulim crossbar in the tenth minute.
In the 58th minute, Anthony Rodrigues of Verna passed to Joseph Cruz, who netted the first goal of the match. Joseph netted his second goal in the 51st minute to make it 2-0 for Verna Veterans. Gladstone's solo effort shot was saved by Camilo Baretto, the goalkeeper of Verna, in the 64th minute.
Chess workshop held for students
Lions and Leo Club of Tivim held a special chess workshop to guide students and provide them with basic information about the various chess moves. The seminar was attended by Sanjiv Kanekar (Administrator), Yatin Kanekar, Ashwinikumar Karpe, Leo member Yashraj Karpe, who sponsored chess boards for the school.
High School in-charge Sarvesh Barve and the teaching staff of Gopalkrishna High School were present. Coaching was given by Shirish Divkar, who is the vice-president of the Bardez Taluka Chess Association. The topics covered included: the pieces and their movements, pawn promotion, castling, check, checkmate, stalemate, basic pawn-less endgames, and the names of the squares.
