TIM DOGAIM EK ZATOLIM… Marital bliss amidst crisis

Fr Nevel Gracious new Lenten tiatr is a look at marriages and while well-directed, the script could do with some depth

| MARCH 15, 2020, 02:24 AM IST

Marriages are made in heaven. But they need to be lived on earth! The ups and downs in life have to be taken in the same stride. Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future. But when the past of a partner in marriage raises heads, will the present stand the test of the day?

Which marriages last longer love marriage or arranged marriage? Definitely the marriage in which the partners work to keep it going will work longer. Fr Nevel Gracious new tiatr Tim dogaim ek zatolim is a verdict on marriage.

Script

The script is simple, but under developed and a boring exercise. The sequences are too predictable and have no dramatic element into it. It seems to be one or two of his previous tiatrs re-painted and presented under a new title.

Not a single sequence catches the eye of the audience. The storyline unnecessarily drags ahead to no end.

Comedy

The comedy is decent and simple. The writer needs to be commended for not introducing vulgar comedy as is the current going in tiatrs. The tiatr has reputed comedians but the comedy lacked in both adventure and timing. The comedy had smiles but no laugh out loud moments in it. Moreover, the comedy dose was less and the comedians could have improvised better on the script provided.

Sets

The sets were apt but the furniture were a misery. But then this is the trend of a tiatr. A priest director could not visualize a change in this.

Acting

The tiatr has a highly professional cast. Dolla Mascarenhas and Rosario Botelho, both who excel in their portrayal of the protagonist couple. Their dialogue delivery and expressions were ten on ten.

Melisha as the third person in the couple’s life too was promising and on the mark. Menino Mario plays his character to perfection. Elias as the peacemaker showed a lot of dedication and devotion to the role. He carries a bright promise for the future.

Sedrick has tried different charactors. He had great expressions but alas his timing was very poor. Comedian Domnic was very expressive and full of energy but the poor script did not offer him any succor.

Music / songs

The band music was led by Nolvert Cota wherein he plays the lead trumpet, which was outstanding. He is assisted in symphony by Minguel on the Saxophone, Jefrey on Bass guitar, James on Keyboards and Paklo on drums. James provides apt background score for the tiatr. In the singing side Fr. Nevel introduces songs that are related to the theme and this murders the concept of a tiatr.

Tiatr needs to have songs that are not connected to the tiatr. The songs further drag the tiatr. Menino Mario sings the opening song with gusto and in a style that is inimitably his own. There are also solos well sung by Dolla, Elias and Melisa. There are also some duos and trios but neither of them rise up as outstanding.

Direction

This is a well directed Lenten presentation. But what miracles can a director do when the script has no depth? Being a tiatr from a priest, a lot more was expected however all expectations were crushed. Nevertheless for those wishing to see a decent show with decent comedy this tiatr is recommended for viewing.
