For four days, I decided to stop using emojis on WhatsApp to see how it would affect my communication. At first, it felt unusual and even a little awkward. Emojis have become such a natural part of how I express emotions online that removing them made my messages feel plain or too serious. I found myself re-reading what I typed to make sure I wasn’t sounding rude or dry.
During this time, I had to rely more on words and punctuation to get my tone across. I had to be more thoughtful and deliberate in my messages, especially when joking or being light-hearted, since there was no emoji to soften the tone. It made me realise how much emojis help in avoiding misunderstandings and in making conversations feel warm and friendly.
Some friends even asked if something was wrong, noticing a change in how I was texting. This showed me how emojis have become part of my communication style and identity.
When I finally told my friends about the experiment, they laughed and said, “Please go back to your normal style, this is too weird.” And honestly, I agreed.
Could I survive without emojis? Sure. But would I want to? Definitely not. They’ve become part of my identity, part of the way I connect with people, and part of what makes texting fun. After those four days, the first thing I did was send a big string of emojis to my best friend, just because I missed them.
Overall, the experience was eye-opening. It made me more aware of how much we depend on small icons to convey big feelings. While I managed without them, I definitely missed the ease and fun they bring to chats.
