Revenue collection from the two check posts in Sattari talukahas dwindled over the years, as authorities have either turned a blind eye orare plain inefficient.
There are two check posts in Sattari at Kerim and another atPoriem.
Since the shortest route to Belgaum from Goa is via Chorlapassing through the Kerim village, most goods vehicles use this road totransport various goods from Karnataka to Goa and vice versa.
Goa imports almost 70 percent of the vegetables formBelgaum. Most of the vegetabletransporting vehicles from Belgaum take Chorla route via Kerim to reach Goa.
Since the last one year the road to Belgaum from Chorla hasbeen repaired. Except for a stretch of 2-3 kms, the road is relatively in goodcondition.
Chorla road is the shortest route to Belgaum and thereforemany people prefer to use this road, as it saves time and fuel.
The number of goods vehicles using the Kerim-Chorla road hasincreased tremendously over the last few years.
Consequently the revenue generated at the check post shouldhave also increased corresponding to rise in vehicular traffic. But this hasnot happened.
Surprisingly authorities at the check post have failed tocollect sizeable revenue for reasons best known to them.
In spite of having two check posts “ Goa police and excisedepartment “ the State of Goa hardly earns any revenue from these check posts.
Many trucks reportedly transport iron rods used forconstruction from Goa to Karnataka in the cover of darkness.
“Most of these trucks ply in the night and probablytransport goods illegally by bribing officials at the check post,” a sourcedisclosed.
The excise officials at the check post have also failed tointercept vehicles transporting liquor clandestinely to neighbouring States.
Valpoi Police Inspector, Ramesh Gaonkar has denied lack ofapplication from his officers at the check post.
“We will look into the matter. If there are any complaintswe will take serious action,” is all that Goankar had to say.
