After establishing its electric credentials in India with premium offerings like the Kia EV6 and the flagship Kia EV9, Kia has now stepped into the mass-market EV space with the Carens Clavis EV. Instead of following the crowd into the increasingly saturated mid-size electric SUV segment, Kia has chosen a more practical route — a three-row electric MPV.

Based on the ICE-powered Clavis, the EV derivative is not just a simple powertrain swap. It brings meaningful visual, feature, and packaging changes that help it carve out a distinct identity. In a market obsessed with SUV silhouettes, the Clavis EV positions itself as a sensible, family-first electric vehicle that promises space, comfort, and usable range in one cohesive package.

Exteriors

While the silhouette remains familiar, several EV-specific design cues differentiate the Clavis EV from its ICE sibling. The front fascia gets active aero flaps for improved efficiency, along with a centrally mounted charging port that gives it a clean, EV-forward look. The stacked LED fog lamps add character, while the redesigned grille area aligns it visually with Kia’s global electric family.

New alloy wheels with aero inserts enhance efficiency and aesthetics. Around the rear, subtle revisions — including a reworked left rear fender — complete the transformation. The overall look is modern yet understated, ensuring it doesn’t alienate traditional MPV buyers while still appearing contemporary.

Interiors

Inside is where the Clavis EV feels significantly re-imagined. The floating centre console, inspired by the EV6, replaces the conventional layout seen in the ICE version. This design not only looks futuristic but also improves practicality by creating additional storage space beneath, thanks to the absence of a transmission tunnel.

Material quality deserves appreciation. The Navy Blue dashboard insert breaks the monotony of beige-and-black interiors, while Kia’s new ‘pad print’ texture elevates the cabin’s premium appeal. The dual-tone, double D-cut steering wheel adds a sporty yet sophisticated touch. Even the AC vents have been simplified for a cleaner aesthetic.

Space remains a highlight. The driver sits slightly higher, offering excellent road visibility. The second row slides and reclines, enhancing flexibility, though the 60:40 split means the middle occupant’s comfort depends on seat positioning. The third row, while not expansive, is practical enough for adults on shorter drives — not just children.

Tech & safety

Kia has equipped the Clavis EV generously. The feature list includes a panoramic sunroof, ventilated front seats, powered driver’s seat, retractable seatback tables, UV-cut glass, five USB Type-C ports, connected car technology, and one-touch electric tumble function for the second row.

The inclusion of Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality — both internal and external — enhances its lifestyle appeal. Level 2 ADAS further strengthens its safety credentials, along with multiple airbags and advanced driver aids. While additions like V2V charging or a USB Type-A port would improve versatility, the overall package feels comprehensive.

Tech specs

The Clavis EV is available with two battery packs — 42kWh and 51.4kWh. The larger battery, which we tested, produces 169bhp and 255Nm from a single front-mounted electric motor. The claimed ARAI range stands at 490km.

Power is sent to the front wheels, and drive modes allow drivers to tailor performance. The gear selector is mounted behind the steering wheel, accompanied by a dedicated EV start-stop button for a clean dashboard layout.

Drive

Performance is effortlessly brisk. The Clavis EV accelerates smoothly with minimal throttle input, while harder acceleration unleashes the full torque instantly, pushing it into triple-digit speeds quickly. Eco mode tempers responses, City mode balances efficiency and performance, and Sport mode sharpens throttle inputs, occasionally introducing mild torque steer.

The steering is light and well-suited for urban driving. Visibility is excellent thanks to the large glass area and slightly elevated seating position. Ride quality stands out as a strong point — it absorbs broken roads, speed breakers, and uneven surfaces with commendable composure. Some body roll is noticeable, particularly under aggressive acceleration, but overall comfort remains impressive.

Verdict

The Kia Carens Clavis EV successfully blends practicality, technology, and performance into a unique offering. It undercuts alternatives like the BYD eMax 7 while offering genuine three-row usability — something most electric SUVs cannot match. Minor shortcomings aside, the Clavis EV emerges as a sensible, family-oriented electric vehicle that stands apart in a crowded segment. For buyers seeking space, features, and credible range without stretching into premium EV territory, it makes a compelling case.
