The Canacona branch of Bharatiya Bhasha Suraksha Manch (BBSM) sat on a day-long protest at Chaudi to protest government’s decision to continue grants to English medium primary schools.

BBSM members also vowed to corner the government and decided to activate its various cells, including students, mahila mandals, Rastra Sevaks/Sevikas, especially at government functions attended by ministers, until the government stopped financial grants to English medium primary schools in the State, informed sources.

BBSM activists sat at a specially erected pandal at Old Bus-Stand Chaudi as Canacona MLA and Minister for Sports, Agriculture, Animal Husbandary and Trival Welfare Ramesh Tawadkar unfurled the national flag at Gaitonde Maidain, barely metres away from BBSMs protest.

Incidentally, authorities had sensed trouble during the Liberation Day function and guarded the area since early Saturday morning.

However, BBSM activists preferred to keep their protest inside the pandal at Chaudi’s old bus-stand, even as some BBSM activists first attended the government's Goa Liberation Day function at Gaitonde Maidan, before proceeding to attend the dharna at the Old bus-stand.

Even though no speeches were made at the beginning, some slogans were chanted and banners were put up at the venue.
