The driver and a cleaner of a truck were seriously injured after being trapped in the cabin for over six hours, when their truck fell into a gorge in Pilye-Dharbandora on Tuesday.

According to Ponda police, the incident took place at about 3 pm, when a truck laden with iron bars fell into the gorge.

“The lorry (MP-09-HG-7622) loaded with iron bars was proceeding towards Ponda, when the driver lost control of the vehicle at a sharp turn near the sugar factory and went off the road, before falling into the gorge,” a policeman told The Goan.

Rescue operations were ongoing till Tuesday night, as the fire brigade personnel were struggling to remove the driver and a cleaner trapped in the cabin. A crane was also pressed into service to lift the ill-fated truck.

To make matters worse, the water flowing in the gorge began to enter the cabin, while some iron bars had also slid inside the cabin.

Attempts were made to divert the water flowing into the cabin and to cut the iron bars inside the cabin.

Sources informed that another cleaner, who was present during the accident, had managed to jump out before the truck fell into the gorge.
