Applying to university and choosing what to study are among the biggest decisions a young person will make. Students want to pursue courses that match their interests and passions while meeting the demands of the future workforce. But what if the student is not sure what they want to study or they have more than one interest?
At UNSW Sydney, a dual degree enables students to complete two degrees, in most instances within the same timeframe as a traditional single degree or slightly longer. That additional time may deter some future students from pursuing a dual degree. But a dual degree is a great way to combine a student’s passions with career aspirations and may help them carve out a unique and exciting career path.
With a dual degree, students are able to refine their educational path to better fit their needs. It also gives students the opportunity to further immerse themselves in their studies and take full advantage of the student experience in a way that their single degree peers simply can’t. While students might think the extra year or two will delay their entrance to the workforce, an employer will see a candidate with greater knowledge, deeper experience and academic mettle, which can help a student stand out from the crowd of job applicants.
As disruptive technological advances, automation and globalisation revolutionise workplaces around the world, the next generation of university students must be creative, analytical and adaptable. Completing a dual degree gives students the opportunity to explore their interests in more than one area and broadens their career options.
Dual degrees have long been a defining feature of the educational offering at UNSW and we see growing demand from international students for this component of our offering with approximately 10 per cent of international students opting for a dual degree.
