We are concerned citizens residing in the village of Anjuna.One of our villagers, Rita Almeida was murdered in cold blood, allegedly by theaccused Mr Ulbaldo Fernandes, another resident of Anjuna.
We are disturbed at the callous and slip- shod manner inwhich the investigation is being carried out by the Anjuna Police. Just after her murder, some villagers hadarrived at the spot of murder and had seen Rita fallen on the floor with bloodoozing from her nose and mouth. There was also blood visible under her head andon her chest. Since one person in the village had met with her and anotherperson had spoken to her hardly a hour prior to her murder, we know Rita was ingood health on the day of her murder.
The police did not come equipped to deal with a crime andhad a cursory look at the scene of murder. Thus we are convinced that thePolice officials seemed to be bent on protecting the accused and have shown atearing hurry to complete investigations. We are informed that it was only after people in the village created ahue and cry and did not permit the doctor from embalming the body, that thebody was taken for a post mortem. Ourfears of Rita’s untimely death being a murder was confirmed from the postmortem report when the doctor concluded that death was due to hemorrhage from agunshot injury in the heart. It is ourconcern that the gun, the murder weapon has not yet been recovered.
We are in constant fear that the accused will be granted baildue to the lackadaisical attitude of the police in doing the basicinvestigation required in such an obvious case of murder. The fact that some prominent doctors haveattempted to shield the accused by trying to issue false death certificates andinsist that body be buried without any proper post mortem has only increasedour fears.
The Dy.Sp of Police, Serafin Dias is gone on record on localTV channels that Rita has died due to an ‘asthma attack’. One of the villagersasked the Dy.S.P, when he arrived at the spot to seal the house, since no closerelatives of the deceased were present at the moment. However, the Dy.SPrefused to take any action.
The delay in proper investigations has already harmed theinvestigation. It is in these circumstances, we the local people of Anjunavillage, state that we have no faith in the investigation being conducted bythe present police officers. It is ourrequest that the investigation be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) Bambolim, Goa. This is necessaryto undo the damage already done by the present police in their attempt to savethe murderer.
