These days as the pipelines for the water supply project under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) are being laid in the city, the sound of pneumatic jackhammers digging the roads in the city carries to my ears and remind me of the tough manual work that these men are contracted to do.
Also, early in the morning as I go out to get my copy of newspapers, I can see the women sweepers of the CCP conducting their duty with diligence. Same is the case of the man who without fail comes to collect the garbage at our doorsteps.
My heart goes out to them and I hope that these manual workmen are henceforth going to be treated humanely by their respective authorities. Let us pray for these men and women, so that they will be healthy and sturdy to bear the burden of manual work and thus share the heavy weight which they carry. My name gets published every time I write an article or a letter to the editor, but these manual workmen seldom ever get mentioned. It is thus our moral duty to treat them better than before.
