India is on the cusp of a solar energy revolution. This became apparent after bidding closed for constructing 500 MW of projects in Rajasthan. Solar power tariffs plunged to Rs 2.44 per unit when Acme Solar won the bid for a 200 MW plant and SBG Cleantech bagged the 300 MW project quoting one paise higher. The auction highlights India’s success in expanding its green energy plan by drawing bids from companies in Japan, Taiwan, South Africa, France etc. Solar energy is still a small ingredient in the energy basket, but its expansion could bring down carbon emissions and reduce dependence on crude oil and coal which are highly polluting. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s push for solar energy started when he was chief minister of Gujarat. As the head of the nation he is in a better position to drive the programme across all states and help India to lead the green energy movement. India’s energy production is heavily dependent on coal and presently, solar energy comprise a meager 3.7 per cent of the total energy generated in the country, but the potential is huge and waiting to be tapped. India needs more energy to fuel its growth and the green path is not only good for the nation but for the whole world as well.
