Controversy aside, the Mega PTM initiative in Delhi for government schools is a well thought out plan. A plan by Delhi Deputy CM Manish Sisodia, the Mega PTM saw parents of over 16 lakh students, studying in over 2500 government schools attend a mega parents teacher meeting, which was marred by a single suicide by a girl over negative feedback from her teacher. The meeting was organized to eventually bring the quality of education on par with that imparted by private schools. The idea that parents play a part in their child s life at school is not a new one, but parent teacher associations and meeting are not well attended ones, no matter where you are in the country. Unlike many private schools where participation by parents is mandatory, government schools have are disconnected from parents. The topics discussed at the meeting were bad handwriting, improper usage of grammar and other issues like leadership skills. What this does is also make the parents officially responsible for continuing that training at home, not just overseeing their homework. It also works to help parents understand the extent of the education that their wards get.
