President Obama recently admitted that there have been 994 mass shootings in America, since his re-election in 2012. This is an astonishing stat, coupled with the fact that there have been more than 300 shooting in 2015 itself, averaging one a day. The latest one occurred in Colorado Springs when a man with a high powered rifle entered a Planned Parenthood clinic and held hostages for hours. He was eventually shot down but besides him, three people lost their lives. One of them was a police officer.
The Democrats have long been for gun control. President Obama himself has proposed bills and Hillary Clinton is focusing on gun control as one of the key points of her presidential campaign. She, and a large percentage of America, are asking for tighter laws.
There is a need to put measures in place for better background checks. Currently, if the background check doesn’t come back in three days, buyers can pick up their guns. This needs to change. There is also a proposal to hold manufacturers responsible for gun violence, but there are legal issues with that.
There are roadblocks. The pro-gun lobby has been funded well, and the NRA and the Republican party are strong backers of the right to bear arms, as noted in the constitution. But, there has to be some leeway for compromise, lest more people lose their lives.
