The Saligao Association UK, which was founded in 1969 and keeps the village traditions alive in the UK, celebrated the 150th anniversary of the Mãe de Deus Church in Saligao with a function in London.
The Mass was celebrated at Sacred Heart Church Hall, Wimbledon, and Fr Stephen Dias was the main celebrant.
Later, a dine and dance party was organised and the packed gathering was treated to music, games, traditional Goan dance performances and a Mando sing-song session by members. Members sang tunes like ‘Tamde Rosa’ and ‘Viva re Viva’ together as a community.
On the occasion, the committee also celebrated the birthday of their senior-most member Annie Doyle who turned 101 this year.
UK’s leading band ‘Treble Makers’ performed at the event and members of this band hail from Saligao. The stage was also shared by DJ Ritchie and MC Simon Varella.
Corridinho dances were performed by Goenchim Dulpodam UK and there was a solo performance by award-winning Goan singer Anslem Fernandes.
Bernie's Kitchen provided the catering with Goan delicacies.
Following the Annual General Body meeting at the event, the new managing committee elected were Vanessa Fernandes (President), Levis Mendonça (Treasurer), Gracy Serrao (Secretary) and Melanie Ribeiro (Social Secretary).
The Saligao Association UK thanked all members and guests who attended to make the event a grand success.
