Tell us more about your latest single ‘Someday in the Sun'
My sister wrote the song and I put the tune to it. It was a fun project because my colleagues (from Pade Conceicao College of Enginnering, where she teaches) , Gaurak Phaldessai, Mohnish Borker and Sanket Prabhudessai came all the way from Margao to help shoot the video. My friend Tilya Fernandes helped me to edit it.The song is very hopeful. Things didn't work out between the two lovers in the song - for whatever reason. But they just might in the future.
How long ago were the lyrics and music for the tune put into place?
This song was written two years ago. And I put the tune to it a few months ago. I wanted to give it a retro feel and hence chose a beat that kind of embodied it. I wanted the song to feel nostalgic and even the little background effects - for some reason - make you feel nostalgic.
What were some of the challenges you faced while putting the whole thing together?
It's all about the synchronization. The lyrics and the music need to match. The video and the choreography need to reflect the lyrics. Hence this can be challenging. Also waiting for an appropriate time to shoot the video was the most bugging part because the ideation behind the song began in the monsoons! Then, it's about publicity. Spreading the word to others is a challenge.
Your first track ‘Subway' also got quite a good response
I imagined a scene where two people only glance at each other each day while travelling - like in the movie Shall we Dance. Those emotions inspired me and I came up with the song. I wanted to experiment with syncopated chords and hence played with the song composition.
Close family and friends can sometimes be a little too inquisitive about who the person behind a particular tune is. Have you faced any such embarrassing instances too?
People fail to believe that a song can be a general song about a certain emotion. They always relate it to somebody. I love playing that guessing game with people because I don't write about certain people. I write about general situations and try to capture the emotions best.
Tell us about your initiation into music. Also, how many instruments do you play?
Music is in the family. We sing in the church choir, listen to music on the radio during every trip we make in the car, sing together as a family and even watch singing shows on television! I play the keyboard, guitar and the ukulele. I am self - taught. I almost gave up learning the guitar because I found it too difficult. I did this 5-6 times. Now that I finally do know, my music life is so enriched.
When did you begin penning your own tunes and what was that pushed you to finally get your original music out there?
The first song I wrote was in the eighth standard! I used to write rap songs as well. I've even penned a gospel song or two. I used to write originals and send voice recordings to my friends and share it with my family. All my friends, but two people in particular, Saish Verenkar and Flasio Colaco, ate my brains and egged me on to start my Youtube channel. I guess they believed in my music more than I did! My family too has always believed in my dreams.
And when can we expect more music from you?
I plan to post music regularly - at least once a month! It is challenging however. There are a few projects in the line - up and I hope to get them done. I have also started a trio called ‘Radical' along with two friends of mine - Nikhil Pinto, who gigged with me at Watson's and Ignia, and Richard Pereira. So I hope to release videos of our performances as well.
So is an album of your own in the offing sometime in the future?
All my friends have asked me to release one. So let's see. I am hesitant because people might not buy it and might download it online. So as of now I'm good releasing singles!
