Feast of St Francis Xavier

MELBOURNE
The Goan Overseas Association NSW hosted a warm and spirited celebration of the Feast of St. Francis Xavier on Saturday at St John XXIII Catholic Parish, Glenwood–Stanhope Gardens, Sydney-Australia on November 22.
The event drew Goan families and well-wishers from across Sydney, gathering in faith, fellowship and a shared cultural heritage.
The celebration began at 11.30 am with a solemn Community Feast Mass celebrated in both English and Konkani by Fr Jolly Chacko. His homily reflected on the missionary zeal of St Francis Xavier and emphasised the importance of preserving Goan traditions within the diaspora. Quite a few prayers and hymns were sung in Konkani, and one of the readings was also delivered in Konkani, adding a rich cultural dimension to the liturgy. The Church resonated with devotion, music and a strong sense of unity.
At the end of the Mass, Sanjay Fernandes, President of the Goan Overseas Association NSW, delivered the vote of thanks. He warmly commended Fr Jolly Chacko for going above and beyond to learn and deliver several lines in Konkani.
He also appreciated the choir for their beautiful hymns rendered in both English and Konkani, and encouraged the continued use of Konkani while expressing gratitude to the congregation for their enthusiastic participation.

Following the Mass, the community gathered in the Church Hall for an enjoyable afternoon of fellowship and entertainment. Traditional Goan sweets and a variety of lunch items were available for sale, enhancing the festive atmosphere.
Families and friends enjoyed lively interaction, games of bingo, and a special visit from Santa, which delighted the children.
Parents brought small Christmas gifts for their young ones, continuing a beloved tradition within the community. The event also extended warm hospitality to senior non-working members aged 65+, who were specially invited for a complimentary lunch in recognition of their contributions and presence.
Supported through a gold coin donation, the celebration maintained a relaxed and family-friendly environment, with guests bringing their own beverages and enjoying a comfortable community setting.
The GOA NSW committee ensured smooth organisation, accessibility and a welcoming atmosphere throughout the event. The celebration once again highlighted the strong cultural bonds within the Goan community in NSW and reaffirmed the enduring significance of the Feast of St Francis Xavier.
