The Goan community in Doha is in mourning following the passing of two respected and widely admired personalities, Sebastian ‘Seby’ Mascarenhas and his brother Antonio ‘Tony’ Mascarenhas, whose lives were marked by service, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to community welfare.

Remembering Seby, a Goan community leader John De Sa recalls first meeting him in 2005 at a wedding in Doha — a meeting that blossomed into a lifelong friendship.

“What began with singing Mandos and Dulpods that evening became a bond that never faded. It felt as though we had always known each other,” he shared.

Though Seby lived in Dukhan and later in Mesaieed, distance never diminished his relationships. Known for his vibrant personality, Seby made a lasting impact as a gifted Toastmaster, emcee, and speaker.

A prominent member of the Konkan Toastmasters Doha, he was admired for his award-winning speeches and his ability to inspire and uplift audiences.

Beyond the stage, Seby was a man of quiet generosity. His acts of kindness extended even to maintaining the Dukhan Cemetery and assisting during times of need — reflecting a deeply compassionate spirit. A multi-talented individual, he excelled in sports, music, and the arts, yet remained humble and selfless.

He also served the community in various capacities, including as Cultural Secretary of the Goa Cultural Association. A devoted lector in the Church and a familiar presence at parish events, Seby was known for bringing people together and fostering unity.

Together with his brother Tony, Seby co-founded the Ave Maria Athletic and Walkers Club, an initiative dedicated to guiding youth through sports and discipline. Their shared vision extended beyond athletics, focusing on building character, teamwork, and resilience among young people.

One of De Sa’s cherished memories is performing Konkani duets with Seby at the ICC in 2024 — a reflection of Seby’s passion for music and his pursuit of excellence.

“Seby was many things, but above all, he was a good man — a loving husband, a caring father, and a friend you could always count on,” De Sa wrote, describing him as not just a friend, but family.

Paying tribute to Antonio Mascarenhas, De Sa described him as a prayerful and disciplined individual who played a vital role in shaping young lives through the Ave Maria Athletic and Walkers Club. The club’s guiding motto, “Save the Child,” continues to stand as a beacon for youth development.

Recalling his last meeting with Tony in Goa on March 8, 2026 — the same day Seby passed away in Doha — De Sa noted Tony’s quiet strength despite the profound grief he carried.

The brothers, who grew up together in Mumbai, shared a deep and inseparable bond throughout their lives. “They were not just brothers, but the closest of friends,” De Sa reflected, adding that in death, they are reunited in eternal peace.

Their passing marks a profound loss not only for the Mascarenhas family but also for the extended community. The tragedy is deeply felt by their families. It was a double blow for Mascarenhas and D'Silva families as their wives are sisters.

Extending heartfelt condolences, De Sa expressed solidarity with the bereaved families and acknowledged the immense void left behind.

“As we bid farewell, we do so with gratitude — for the lives they lived, the values they upheld, and the countless lives they impacted. Though they are no longer with us, their legacy of kindness, service, and friendship will live on,” he said.
