The North London Goans (NLG) hosted their annual celebration of St Francis Xavier’s Feast in Wood Green, North London on December 3.

This is the 41st anniversary celebration of the North London Goans which was started by African Goans who migrated to the UK.

The Feast was well attended with a houseful crowd. Fr Sabu celebrated the Feast Mass, and the Choir was led by Maria Moniz and Paxao Fernandes, adding a special touch to the Holy Mass.

Readings during the Holy Mass were presented by Melissa Fernandes and Maria Fernandes. The bidding prayers were recited by Maria Moniz in Konkani.

After Mass, there was a social get-together with the band ‘Outbreak’ and DJ ensuring that the guests were on the dance floor from start to finish.

“Guests enjoyed the music from the band ‘Outbreak’ and the DJ, so much so that one guest who had attended our function from another Goan group booked them instantly for their function,” said Tony Gomes.

“We had some high-profile individuals like three other priests from another local Church, who came for the function to support the Feast. There was also Robert D’ Souza, a well-known gentleman within our community.”

Bella Fernandes said she thoroughly enjoyed being the MC at the event and also had praised for the caterers.

“Fatima Caterers dished out the best snacks and food. It was so delicious and mouthwatering, just like my mother’s cooking in Goa,” said Bella.

The bar was also run by Fatima Caterers and prices were kept reasonably low so everyone could enjoy a drink or two.

Those members and volunteers who worked hard to ensure the success of the event included Tony Rebello, Tony Gomes, Jude Pereira, Greta Rebello, Nick Rebello, John Fernandes, Vera Joanes, Luis Fernandes, Xavier Joanes and Bella Fernandes.

Youngsters were encouraged to come and be part of the NLG.

Tony Gomes addressed the gathering and thanked the guests for their presence and participation, as well as the volunteers for their planning and preparations.

Loads of spot prizes and raffle prizes were given out throughout the function.

“Everyone went home happy, thankful and appreciated the hard work done by the committee and helpers to put up such a great function,” said Tony Gomes.

“The whole North London Goans Team would like to thank everyone for attending the function to make it a great success despite the bad weather – it was a wet and cold day. With the blessings of Goencho Saib St Francis Xavier, the Feast celebration will continue for many years to come,” he added.
