The United Goans of Saudi Arabia (UGSA) made history by hosting the first-ever World Goa Day celebration in Saudi Arabia, marking a proud and memorable milestone for the Goan community in the Kingdom.

The grand celebration united Goans from across the Eastern Province, Riyadh, Gulf countries and beyond, in a vibrant evening that showcased Goa’s rich culture, heritage, music, and indomitable spirit of unity.

The event witnessed a record turnout, with Goans gathering in large numbers to celebrate their shared identity and traditions. The venue came alive with the colours and rhythms of Goa — filled with laughter, music, and an unmistakable sense of pride as the Goan flag was proudly displayed on Saudi soil for the very first time.

At the heart of this achievement was UGSA President Edson Fernandes, whose leadership and commitment made this landmark event a resounding success.

Fernandes was ably supported by his dedicated team, Ivan Sequeira (Vice President) and Souvi Gomes (Director of Events), who meticulously crafted every detail to perfection. The core committee, comprising Sekita Pereira, Rony Fernandes, Elvino D’Sa, Jose Mascarenhas, Morris D’Costa, Orlando D’Souza, Rafael Crasto, Neville D’Souza, and Basilio Dourado, worked tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure that every aspect of the event ran seamlessly.

The evening began with a warm welcome and an air of celebration.

In his address, the Chief Guest, Simon D’Silva, President of Goan Welfare Association Qatar, highlighted the global unity of Goans. He praised UGSA for its vision and initiative in organising a meaningful event, encouraging the community to continue promoting Goan culture and values wherever they live.

The Guest of Honour, Jude Coutinho, moved the audience with memories of coordinating the first repatriation flight to Goa during the pandemic, reminding everyone of the Goan spirit of compassion and service, helping each other in times of difficulty.

In his address, UGSA President Edson Fernandes expressed heartfelt gratitude to all committee members, sponsors, and well-wishers whose efforts and encouragement turned this dream into reality. He emphasised that this celebration was more than just a cultural gathering — it was a milestone of unity, resilience, and faith, reflecting the strength of Goans in a foreign land.

Updesh Swar, the Master of Ceremonies, who flew in specially from Goa, charmed the audience with his humour, grace, and engaging style. The highlight performance came from the charismatic Goan singer Mark Revlon, whose electrifying stage presence and soulful renditions had the audience dancing and singing along. His performance left a lasting impression and was hailed as one of the best of the night.

Supporting the musical stream was the vibrant Staccato Band, delivering energetic western tunes that kept the atmosphere lively and festive. The momentum continued late into the night with DJ Flossy (from Qatar) and DJ Vax (UGSA’s in-house talent) keeping the dance floor packed with nonstop music, beats, and excitement.

A special live address by Rene Barretto, the founder and convenor of World Goa Day, was streamed during the event, marking a moment of great pride for the Goan community in Saudi Arabia.

Barretto congratulated the UGSA committee for joining the growing list of countries celebrating the Spirit of Goa through World Goa Day. He commended UGSA’s remarkable achievement in bringing Goans together on Saudi soil, adding yet another proud chapter to the global Goan movement.

Despite various challenges, the event ran smoothly and was itself a testament to the meticulous planning, teamwork, and dedication of the entire UGSA committee. The overwhelming turnout, with Goans of all ages coming together as one family, perfectly reflected the warmth, unity, and joyous spirit that define the Goan identity.

In her heartfelt vote of thanks, UGSA Director of Events Souvi Gomes expressed sincere gratitude to the chief guest, guest of honour, performers, sponsors, committee members, and every attendee for their invaluable contribution and participation in making this historic celebration a grand success.

“The First World Goa Day in Saudi Arabia was not just a celebration — it was a landmark achievement that showcased the strength, pride, and togetherness of Goans in the kingdom,” said UGSA President Edson Fernandes.

“With this historic event, UGSA has set a shining example of leadership and unity, paving the way for many more cultural gatherings that will continue to keep the Goan and other communities’ flame alive in the hearts of expatriates.”

Under Fernandes’ guidance, UGSA not only organised an unforgettable celebration but also strengthened the sense of belonging and community among Goans living abroad.
