The first Goan-owned fish store ‘Fish Anchor’ in Hounslow Central, West London, did roaring business on its inaugural day on March 6, with over 200 customers thronging the premises to pick up their favourite fresh fish and other Goan food products.
The shop was inaugurated at 11 am by Fr Patrick D’Souza who recited a short prayer, after which the two partners, Micheal Bevan D’Silva and Alistar De Sa cut the ribbon. Fr D’Souza then blessed the premises.
Fr D’Souza wished the owners the best and added a piece of advice: “While it is important to profit in the business, we should also help the Goan community, by advising fellow Goans who are trying to find their way (here in the UK).”
The partners cut a cake, which incidentally, also marked the birthday of Micheal Bevan D’Silva. All customers were served sandwiches, cakes and soft drinks.
“Over 50 customers had arrived even before the store opened on its first day. All were keen to buy the best fish they could lay their hands on. It was a very busy day and we had brisk sales,” said D’Silva.
“While the shop caters to customers around Hounslow, Southall and Feltham, we had many customers who came from areas as far as Slough, Stains, Harrow and also Reading, which is about 50 miles away. There was a constant flow of customers during the day and all the fresh fish stock got sold before close of business.”
“Apart from fresh fish, Goan products like good quality masalas, spices, pickles and dried Goan chillies were on sale.”
“We also plan to open a special section of home-made Goan food products like traditional sweets and preserved food products from those families who hold a food hygiene certification, thus giving them an outlet to sell their products. A special notice board has also been made available for Goans to advertise their skills and services. Job vacancies will also be posted on this public board,” D’Silva added.
