Jewellery shops downed shutters in the commercial capital on Monday as they observed a ‘token strike’ against what they termed as the arbitrary implementation of Hallmark Unique Identification Number (HUID). All Goa Gold Dealers Association said that while members welcome the hallmarking with open arms, they expressed their strong reservations on HUID.
Association President Pramit Raikar informed that the government should postpone the implementation of HUID saying the cumbersome procedure will not help the business.
In fact, Pramit said the HUID clause in hallmarking will only add to delays. He further contended that the penal clause will go against the traders for no fault of theirs when the fault lies with the hallmarking agency.
'We want to make clear that we are not opposed to hallmarking, but our grievances are against the HUID clause', he said. The one day token strike was staged across the country against the arbitrary implementation of HUID clause. Associations in other parts of the country have opposed implementation HUID, saying it is impractical and unimplemetable.
