MARGAO

The Congress party has expressed its grief over the death of  former Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) President Irene Barros.

Paying his tributes on the sad demise of former Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President,

GPCC Chief Girish Chodankar said, “We have lost a loyal and selfless soldier of the Congress party, Goa lost a devoted and bold daughter and I lost an inspirational guide”.

He added: “I had taken her blessings before taking the charge as the GPCC President”.

Saying that Irene had fought for the Opinion Poll and Konkani, he said and after the liberation, she boldly opposed liquor prohibition imposed by the Government by understanding the culture and tradition of Goa”.

Girish further said that Irene was the first Sarpanch of Betalbatim and contributed for the systematic growth of the village.

“She was the president of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee from 18/12/1980 to 25/2/1982 and worked for the growth of the party selflessly with full commitment and dedication. Her close association with former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was a blessing for Goa on many counts.

Being a loyal party leader she was pained with repeated defections in Goa. Young Congressmen should emulate her party loyalty as she remained as Congresswoman till her last breath," Chodankar added.

He informed that Congress leaders will pay their last respect to her by draping her mortal remains with the Congress flag at 9am on August 24 at her Betalbatim residence.
