Birth anniv of Indian playwright celebrated

PANAJI

“Bharatmuni was the first playwright in India. His book 'Natyashastra' elaborates on how a play should be and on what parameters it should be written or performed. Bharatmuni has illustrated the framework of a play and the rules, regulations and conditions how it should be staged before the audience. Therefore, it is necessary for today's youth to remember Bharatmuni if they wish to excel in the field of drama and theatre,” stated Damodar Naik, former Fatorda MLA and the chairman of Ravindra Bhavan Margao. Naik was speaking on the occasion of the birth anniversary of late Bharatmuni which is an annual event at Margao Ravindra Bhavan. In the past, this programme was attended by theatre stalwarts like Prashant Damale and Sachin Khedekar, who appreciated the initiative of remembering the ancient Indian playwright and expressing gratitude towards his invaluable contribution to drama, theatre and plays. “When we speak about theatre, we remember Shakespeare, however, Bharatmuni has written about plays around four to five thousand years ago. We must not forget an Indian who has written extensively on plays and theatre, decades ago,” said Naik.
