Gold worth Rs 57 lakh seized at airport

The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of Goa Customs on Friday seized 1.276 kgs of gold worth Rs 57 lakh from an international passenger at Dabolim airport.

According to a press release issued by Goa Customs Commissioner V Soundararajan, the AIU of Goa Customs led by Assistant Commissioner of Customs Y B Sahare apprehended an international passenger hailing from Kasargod-Kerala, who had arrived from Sharjah by an Air Arabia flight.

"The Customs officials recovered eleven 10-tola gold bars weighing 1,276 grammes and valued at Rs 57.75 lakh. The 10-tola gold bars were concealed in the check-in baggage of the passenger. The gold has been seized under the provisions of the Customs Act, 1962," stated Soundararajan.

Since January, the AIU of Goa Customs has seized gold worth Rs 2.89 crore.

The entire exercise was conducted under the support of M S Meena, Joint Commissioner of Customs and overall guidance of S V Soundararajan, Commissioner of Customs. Further investigation is in progress.
