‘Some p’yat secretaries involved in corruption’

MAPUSA

Panchayat Minister Mauvin Godinho on Tuesday admitted on the floor of the House that some panchayat secretaries were involved in corrupt practices and government will not mind taking action against them.

“There are some panchayat secretaries who are involved in corrupt practices and whose behavior is questionable, but I would not like to paint all of them in the same brush,” Godinho said.

The panchayat minister was replying to a calling attention motion tabled by Benaulim MLA, Churchill Alemao, over the fear in the minds of the people as panchayat secretaries failed to issue separate house numbers to members of joint families.  Godinho further said that government will not shy away from taking action against any such errant panchayat secretaries. “We will take action against such wayward panchayat secretaries. But after we take action don’t come running to us,” the minister warned.

On Alemao’s concerns, the panchayat minister said government had not come across any instance whereby the pancahayat secretaries faced problems while processing applications for separate house numbers.

He assured the House that government may frame rules and guidelines on issue of separate house numbers to members of joint family.

“In order to avoid any hardships or inconvenience and to overcome problems faced by panchayat secretaries, government will think about framing guidelines and rules for issue of separate house numbers to members of joint family,” Godinho said.

He said 200 applications for separate house numbers were pending in Salcete and 27 in Tiswadi as on date.
