Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho on Friday said the State government would grant an additional 15 days for taxi operators to fit digital meters on their taxis and assured that no action would be taken to cancel taxi permits during this period.
Godinho appealed to the agitating taximen to fix digital meters to comply with the high court directive on digital meters.
"The taxi operators who have not fitted the meters should write to the department to grant additional time. This letter can then be put forward to the court demanding additional time to fit the meters," said Godinho while speaking to media persons.
Godinho said the black and white taxi operators from Dabolim and Mapusa had met him and congratulated the government for increasing the taxi fare.
“They conveyed their practical financial problems for not fitting the digital meters. I have considered their demand and directed transport secretary not to take action on taximen who have not fitted meters,” said Godhino.
Godinho, however, appealed to the taximen not to remain adamant and to fit the digital meters to comply with the High Court order.
He said a 50 per cent subsidy on digital meters has been slightly modified so that taximen get a 50 per cent subsidy within 3-4 days of fitting the digital meter.
