Panaji: The Crime Branch has arrested a couple from Mumbai, Akshay Sawant (34) and Pallavi Ghadge (33), for allegedly defrauding several people in Goa, including jewellers, out of over Rs 5.7 crore. The couple is accused of misleading investors by promising profitable returns from the gold trade and offering gold at lower rates.
According to CB officials, the couple initially gained investors' trust by selling gold coins purchased from the local market at prices below the market rate. However, once the investors decided to invest more money, Sawant and Ghadge demanded full advance payments, promising returns in the form of gold or profits from the gold trade.
The police disclosed that Sawant and Ghadge failed to deliver the promised gold coins or profits, thereby cheating the complainants and investors.
