Anganwadi workers and helpers, who are on an indefinite strike since the last six days, have now decided to remain at the Azad maidan at night as part of a round-the-clock agitation and threatened to intensify their strike if the State government did not accept their demands for a salary hike and other pending issues. The state Anganwadi workers under the banner of All Goa Union of Anganwadi Workers have been on a protest at the Azad Maidan since the last six days and they would arrive at the venue in the morning and return home at night.
They have now decided to remain at the venue round the clock.
“We have submitted a letter to the deputy collector and it is the responsibility of the government to provide security to the agitating women,” said Devyane Tamse, president of All Goa Union of Anganwadi Workers.
The agitating Anganwadi workers have rejected the government’s proposal to enhance the salaries of anganwadi helpers and teachers by Rs 750 and Rs 1,500 respectively, stating that the increase was too meagre.
Claiming that their salaries have not been increased in the last 10 years, Tamse has demanded a minimum salary hike of Rs 8,000 and other leave and pension benefits.
The union has already submitted a list of 11 demands to the State government, which include increment in the salary, pension and retirement benefits.
