MARGAO
The South Goa district Collectorate came alive on Tuesday as hundreds of candidates contesting the ensuing Panchayat polls turned up before the Returning Officers for scrutiny of nomination papers.
A nomination of a candidate, who had filed his papers for the Benaulim panchayat, was rejected by Returning Officer Laxmikant Desai on grounds he was underage. “Upon perusing the documents and nomination paper filed by the applicant, it is seen that the application has not attained the age of 21 years to contest the election. Hence, nomination is rejected,” the Returning Officer ruled.
The three Returning Officers appointed to conduct elections for the 33 village panchayats in Salcete block had close to 1000 nomination papers, around 994 to be precise.
The candidates turned up before the Returning Officers as they took up scrutiny of the nomination papers field for all the wards.
