Calangute police on Sunday busted a gang of vehicle lifters and arrested its two members in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. A total of six vehicles worth around Rs 10 lakh have been recovered from them, police said.
The accused have been identified as Sanjay Kalke and Saddam Khudbuddin Jamadar, both residents of Kolhapur in Maharashtra.
Police said that these vehicle thieves used to sell vehicles by changing their colour and registration number in Kolhapur.
Almost a month back, Calangute police had received a complaint that the accused had taken a two-wheeler and a car on rent at Baga, Calangute and never returned them.
The accused had apparently provided fake Identity cards at the time of taking the vehicles on rent.
Police put the mobile number provided by the accused on technical surveillance through which the identity of the accused was revealed.
Although the accused frequently changed their location, Calangute Police managed to trace the accused and nabbed them at Uchgaon, Kolhapur.
The modus operandi of the accused was to take car/bikes on rent from Goa and change their colour and registration number in Kolhapur and later dispose of the vehicles for a price.
The arrest led to recovery of six stolen vehicles “ five two-wheelers and one four-wheeler all worth around Rs 10 lakhs.
A police official informed that more vehicles could be recovered from the accused.
Calangute police is investigating further.
