Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Friday highlighted the long-term benefits of the Spinal Cord Rehab Centre and Pradhanmantri Divyansh Kendra, recently launched at GMC for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
At the ongoing International Purple Fest-Goa 2024, he further underscored the importance of PwD representation in mainstream politics, acknowledging their achievements in various other fields.
“I am proud to have the participation of 17 countries here at this international event. The opening of Spinal Cord Rehab Centre and Pradhanmantri Divyansh Kendra at GMC are two steps forward to create an inclusive society," Sawant said.
He went on to highlight that there is a challenge in accuracy of data collection of PwDs, which is crucial and need assistance of the public, in better framing of policies. “It enables the policy makers stakeholders and advocates to understand the diverse experiences faced by PwDs, address issues, and formulated better interventions," the CM added.
As a part of the Fest, the Purple Think Tank section hosted a series of panel discussions, curated and organised by the National Centre for Promotion of Employment for Disabled People (NCPEDP). A member of NCPEDP, Akshay Jain, emphasised the importance of disaggregated data for informed decision-making and policymaking for persons with disabilities.
“Disaggregated data is crucial for informed decision-making and policymaking for persons with disabilities. It empowers us to develop appropriate schemes and policies. Individuals also play a role by identifying themselves with disabilities," he said.
"Despite being the most populous country, the reported disability rate of 2.2 per cent in India seems incongruent with global estimates, prompting a critical panel discussion on the accuracy of the data."
Nine panel discussions were held at the fest, covering critical subjects such as assistive technology, health insurance, education and employment for persons with disabilities, political inclusion of persons with disabilities, desegregated data, sensors and social inclusion, and promoting new leadership.
