“The government that cannot guarantee health to its citizens and more specifically, cannot provide oxygen facilities at its premier health institution (Goa Medical College) to save the lives of Covid patients has no right and authority to continue in office even for a single day,” feels Adv Yatish Naik, general secretary, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee.
Continuing his argument that the situation in Goa has become very critical due to the pandemic, Naik pointed out that though the population of the State is around 14-15 lakh, the total cumulative population affected by Corona is 1,32,585 till a day ago. “The death toll has crossed 2,000 today, which proves that the situation is very serious in Goa. The governmental apathy, mismanagement, misadministration should be held responsible for the State to reach this stage,” alleges Naik.
Pointing out that when cases were increasing in Karnataka and Maharashtra, Goa government in anticipation of the 2nd wave should have upgraded the health facilities, ensured oxygen plants at hospitals, oxygen beds and ventilators.
“The Goa government did not even make the RT-PCR tests compulsory, until the High Court ordered them to do them mandatorily. The Panchayats and Municipalities voluntarily declared lock-downs, when they saw that the situation was going out of control, as the government was not willing to announce a lock-down. Now the government has declared a curfew, not a lock-down. Now the cases are increasing and the government is responsible for this,” alleged Naik.
