Panaji: In a recent update, Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar confirmed that the government is taking significant steps to tackle illegal fishing in Goa. The Department of Fisheries is actively involved in curbing unauthorised fishing practices. This includes regular patrols aimed at preventing the use of purse seine canoes, trawlers, and motorised canoes in zones designated specifically for traditional Ramponkars and Magkars. To bolster enforcement efforts, the government has enlisted the help of Marine Police officers, ensuring that those assigned to this task hold at least the rank of Deputy Superintendent. These officers are tasked with monitoring and controlling illegal fishing activities along the coast, enhancing the Department’s ability to manage and reduce violations. Regarding penalties for illegal fishing, the Department utilises two dedicated vessels for patrolling Goa’s territorial waters. When vessels are found violating regulations, they are impounded and docked at designated jetties where legal proceedings are carried out. In addition, the Department has established a 24x7 Control Room to receive and address complaints, further supporting its enforcement operations.
