While the number of high-rise constructions, hotels and houses has increased tremendously in the last one decade, infrastructure to supply water has remained static.
The government has failed to expand the infra at the Assonora water treatment plant which looks after water supply to seven constituencies in Bardez including the highly populated Calangute-Candolim-Anjuna coastal belt.
There are three treatment plants in Assonora each with a capacity of 12, 30 and 50 mld.
Incidentally, the 50 mld plant was commissioned way back in 2012.
Obviously, with the rise in constructions the demand for water has increased but the basic infra to supply water has not kept pace with the requirement.
Sudden mechanical breakdowns and power-related issues at the water treatment plant compounds the problem further.
Records of shutdown over the years portray a different story.
Last year, people of Bardez had to go without water on four different occasions for a period of minimum three days to maximum 10 days.
Similarly, in 2020, water supply was cut off on three occasions while in 2019 Bardez went without water supply on six different occasions.
The reasons for shutdown vary from pump failures to power-related issues and from breach in Tillari water canal to shifting of pipelines.
