While the newly-elected Cuncolim Municipal Council adopted a resolution in support of the freedom fighters memorial project, there was opposition outside, with MLA Clafacio Dias and activist Ronny Dias questioning the Council’s decision for maintaining the project with finance from Yuri Alemao.
MLA Clafacio questioned the decision to undertake the repair of the freedom fighters memorial with finance from Yuri. “There are Cuncolkars who can undertake the project. We should not forget that Cuncolim had started the first revolt in 1583 which culminated in the liberation of Goa. It was Cuncolkars and the freedom fighters, Goa has got the freedom. People of Cuncolim will not accept the proposal to accept finance from Yuri to take up the project,” he added. Clafacio added: “Let the CMC say they have no funds and we will arrange the funds. The CMC and Yuri should do well to repair the illumination installed during Joaquim’s tenure to make Cuncolim Singapore”.
Outgoing CMC Councillor Shashank Desai warned that people of Cuncolim along with the families of freedom fighters will take a morcha on the CMC if the proposal to take up the project with Yuri’s money is not shelved.
