Marooned residents inhabiting the low-lying areas of Comba in Margao received unusual visitors in their homes on Wednesday “ the catfish.
With River Sal flowing in full spate and flood waters submerging the fields along the floodplains, the low-lying areas of Comba have been inundated by floodwater over the last three days. Fears are being raised that with the sewerage overflowing from several chambers, the floodwater mixed with sewage may enter the houses if the rains do not subside in the next 24 hours.
While a couple of residents have shifted to safer places after floodwater entered their houses, the residence of Prakash Borkar saw catfish that strayed into their home on Wednesday. The marshy-lying areas of Comba along the Margao ring road are the home of the catfish, which breed in the stormwater nullah choked with overflowing sewage. With the floodwater not receding in the area for the last three days, catfish have entered the neighbouring homes inundated with water.
Ex-Comba councillor Ketan Kurtarkar hoped and prayed that sewage mixed with rainwater won't flow into the houses of the marooned residents. Sources said the low-lying areas of Comba have witnessed large-scale flooding for a fortnight with the River Sal flowing in full spate and the flood waters not draining out.
