Goods worth Rs 5 lakh destroyed in major factory fire at Mapusa

Goods worth Rs 5 lakh were destroyed in a major fire at a winding motor factory in Karaswada-Mapusa on Wednesday morning.

However, no person was hurt in the mishap, fire officials informed.

The factory workers initially tried to douse the fire with emergency fire extinguishers but later alerted the Mapusa fire station at around 7.40 am.

It took over one hour to douse the fire, but by then goods including winding motors and electrical appliances worth over Rs 5 lakh were gutted.

According to the Mapusa fire station in-charge Bosco Ferrao, the cause of the fire is suspected to be a short circuit.

“We have estimated the loss of around Rs 5 lakh. Although we suspect the cause of the fire to be a short circuit, I will write to the power department asking them to ascertain the exact cause of the fire,” Ferrao said.

A team of fire officials led by Mapusa Fire Station in-charge Bosco Ferro along with sub-officer Premanand Kambli, leading firefighter Salim Sheikh and firefighters Prakash Ghadi, Yogesh Amonkar, Pravin Pisurlekar, Sudhir Halarnkar and Arjun Dhavaskar were involved in extinguishing the fire.

1 Covid death, 96 fresh cases on Wednesday

PANAJIOne Covid related death was recorded in the mortality bulletin of the Health Department on Wednesday. The deceased is a 50-year-old woman from Vasco, who succumbed to Covid-19 at Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.The Covid death toll of Goa now stands at 750. A total of 96 new cases from 1,942 samples tested positive in the last 24 hours. The total confirmed cases have touched 52,079 of which 50,515 have recovered. The recovery rate is 97 per cent.
