Minister for Labour and Employment Atanasio Monserrate provided details on how labour rates are set and workers are registered in the Assembly.
On Friday, in response to an inquiry by MLA Delilah Lobo from Siolim, the minister said the government establishes minimum wage rates for workers in 20 different job sectors under the Minimum Wages Act, 1948. The process involves publishing proposed wage rates in the Official Gazette and allowing at least two months for public feedback. After considering the input and consulting with the Minimum Wage Advisory Board, the government finalizes and publishes the new wage rates.
Regarding worker registration, the government ensures that labourers are enrolled under relevant labour laws to access benefits. Upon registration, workers receive official documents confirming their status, but there is no mention of issuing specific identity cards at this time.
