Guirdolim villagers object to converting 37,000 sqm orchard land to settlement

MARGAO

The Guirdolim village gram sabha on Sunday approved the budget estimates for the financial year 2025-26 with members requesting the  Panchayat to levy rent after tenant verification and to recover the tax arrears.

At the gram sabha meeting chaired by Sarpanch Sonia Fernandes on Sunday, members also objected to a reported plan to convert orchard land into settlement in the village.  The gram sabha has also adopted a resolution to name a village road after Seraphino Antao, a runner of Goan descent from Kenya.

After the meeting, the Sarpanch told the media that the gram sabha has given approval for the budget estimates by asking the Panchayat to conduct the tenant verification and levy rent. She has further stated that the gram sabha members have called for recovery of tax arrears.

To a question on the objection lodged by a gram sabha member to the conversion of orchard land admeasuring 37,000 square metres, the sarpanch said the resolution adopted by the gram sabha will be sent to the Town and Country Planning department for action.

As far as the naming of the village road after Seraphino Antao, the Sarpanch said a resolution was passed to this effect at the gram sabha after members pointed out that Antao had won two events at the 1962 Commonwealth Games, making him the first Kenyan Athlete to win a gold medal at an international level.

The Sarpanch said that members have also proposed to the panchayat to make provision for the Guirdolim sports club for the promotion of sporting activities.
