Inquiry launched into Verna IDC car showroom inferno

PANAJI
The Goa Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) has initiated an inquiry into the massive fire incident at two adjacent car showrooms-cum-service centres at IDC Verna on Tuesday, wherein 33 vehicles were destroyed.

No casualties were reported from the site. The fire authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the precise cause of the fire and evaluate the full extent of the damages.

Speaking to 'The Goan', IDC managing director Pravimal Abhishek said that the Corporation has ordered an inquiry and the field officers are already on the job. “Site inspection is being conducted. We need to also ascertain the exact cause of the fire. Other agencies like the Fire department are also working along,” he said.

Abhishek said that once the inspection report is ready, the Corporation will be in a better position to take the required action against the car showrooms-cum-service centres.

As reported, according to the fire and emergency service personnel, the fire originated from dry grass at around 3 pm, which later spread towards the showrooms. The vehicles destroyed in the fire were brought to the showrooms to get serviced, and some were involved in accidental cases.

On Tuesday, IDC Chairman Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco said that most of these abandoned cum condemned vehicles have been lying at the site for the last two-three years and despite directives, the showrooms have not lifted them. “We had issued notices to the showroom operators to lift these vehicles from the site and dispose of them. But they failed to act,” he said.

Lourenco said that the Corporation will now take necessary action against these showrooms.
