Liquor worth over Rs 1.85L seized at Polem beach

1 held, 3 detained; Cops suspect shipment meant for Karwar

CANACONA

Canacona police have seized 1,100 litres of different types of liquor valued over Rs 1.85 lakh from a storeroom at Polem beach, which borders the Goa-Karnataka coastline in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Police suspects the different stocks of IMFL and local brew of Cashew and Palm were stored near the Polem beach coast for onward shipment to Karwar-Karnataka via the sea-route at Polem coast.

Canacona police have arrested one Raju Naik, and placed three others under detention in this connection.

According to SDPO Canacona Tikam Singh Verma, a patrol team consisting of an ASI and two others during a routine round at Polem reportedly saw some suspicious movements in a certain area.

On questioning, a person led the team to a house. After searching the house, police found liquor consignments stocked inside, and accordingly the police station was alerted and Canacona PI, PSI and other policemen rushed to the spot.

DySP Verma, however, stated that no boat or any movements to ship the consignment through the sea were noticed, but the illegally stocked mix-liquor consignment consisting of IMFL and other local produce were confiscated as the suspect could not produce any valid receipts of the liquor stocks found.

The investigations and seizure were carried out between 12 am and 2 am on Wednesday.

Police arrested one Raju Naik, while three others were detained on charges of illegally stocking the liquor.

Verma further informed that following information that the sea route is used to illegally transport liquor to Karwar via boats, etc, the routine patrolling of the coast has been intensified, particularly on the porous border of Polem-Majali.

Verma further informed that since the arrests pertains to Excise department, the seized liquor stock and the arrested person, along with the detained persons will be handed over to the Excise Department for the further investigation.
